Hosted by the Luter Family YMCA this race features a short pool swim, lightning fast bike, and a flat run course.  Whether you are a seasoned athlete or a triathlon novice, this is a great event for you. You’ll feel safe, yet challenged on the rural bike course and will have a flat, fun run to finish your race.  The race starts at 10AM and features a time trial pool swim and a grab and go BBQ meal.  Be sure to check out our Smithfield Sprint Triathlon Video to see what you have been missing, then sign up today!

Smithfield Sprint Triathlon

Saturday April 11, 2026 at 10:00 AM
Triathlon: 300 Meter Swim (Pool); 10 Mile Bike; 5K Run
Aquabike: 300 Meter Swim (Pool): 10 Mile Bike
Course Details & Course Maps

Swim Course: The 300 meter swim takes place in the Luter Family YMCA’s indoor pool.  Athletes start in one corner of this 6 lane, 25 meter pool then “snake swim” their way across the pool.  Athletes start one at a time, every 5-10 seconds, then swim down and back in each lane.  You’ll go under the lane line (flip turn or stand and duck) then continue to work your way across the pool.  Once you finish the swim you’ll run to the transition area located in the parking lot to towel off then head out on your bike.

Athletes will stage outside the pool, swim then exit via the main lobby. This is a self seeded swim, your start time will be determined when you cross the timing mat at the edge of the pool. There is a gear drop as you enter the pool if you need a layer or two to stay warm until you get indoors. We have the following suggested start times to get in the water:

Start Time Range / Time to Complete Swim (mm:ss)
10:00 – 10:06am  / 05:00 and under
10:07 – 10:30am / 05:01 – 06:00
10:31 – 11:00am / 06:00 – 07:00
11:01 – 11:30am / 07:00 – 08:00
11:30 – 12:00pm / 08:00 – 09:00
12:00 – 12:30pm / 09:00 and over

Bike Course: This 10 mile bike course is super flat and heads west out of Smithfield. There exactly 3 turns on the course, so get used to riding in the big ring! The pavement is good throughout and athletes need to be cognizant of the 120 degree left, uphill turn at mile 3.9! Don’t forget to look around, the scenery is amazing. Click here to view the route and elevation (222.8 ft).

Run Course: The out and back 5k run course is fast and flat! The run leaves east from transition through the quiet neighborhoods of Smithfield. It quickly gets rural as you race through Windsor Castle Park, home to woodland trails, a boat launch, fishing pier & the historic manor house – Windsor Castle. Athletes will reverse course 1.55 miles out and return to the YMCA and the finish line. Water is available at the start and at the mid-way point. Click here to view the route and elevation (40 ft).

Why Race the Smithfield Sprint?

“The Smithfield Sprint Triathlon has been my early season race of choice for the past 3 seasons. You can tell most everyone is really happy to be back to racing. The race atmosphere is electric and KMS does such an amazing job putting on this early season race.“

“The Smithfield Sprint Tri was the first event I participated in that showed me that I enjoyed the three events as much as just running. I participate in this race every year, because Greg and his crew do an awesome job to keep you wanting to come back.“

bib# – 41

“This was my first triathlon and it could not have been any more perfect! From the weather, to the course layout, and how well organized it was from start to finish.“

Thank you for making this event your first triathlon! There are many more people like yourself who will be racing this type of event for the first time.  Please note that we no longer have a Novice category/division. We now start all of our races with a time trial start (One at a time) so you can start the race where you feel most comfortable.  We do however have what we call a nervous swimmer swim cap.  If you are nervous about the swim make sure to ask for the nervous swimmers cap at packet pick up.

USA Triathlon requires each triathlete to either have a current membership or purchase a 1-day license. The 1-day license must be purchased when you register. The cost of a 1-day license is $15, an annul membership is $50 for adults and $10 for kids under 18.
