Independence

Olympic & Sprint Triathlons

Relay/Aquabike

May 23, 2021

Quakertown, PA

Located on the outskirts of Allentown, PA at Lake Nockamixon State Park the Independence Triathlon is a great early season race to check your legs.  Just 90 minutes from New York and 60 minutes from Philadelphia, this is an easy race to get to. Athletes will swim in the crisp, fresh waters of Lake Nockamixon (mid 60′) then race Sprint or Olympic distance races on the closed bike course.  Yup, the local fire police shut down the well paved rolling roads for you guys to race; it’s 4 lanes wide and car free.  Lastly, there’s a scenic, rolling run course on the shoulder of 563.  This is a great early season event and is not to be missed.  Plus, Allentown, PA is a pretty fun town with lots of things to do including mountain bike trails, rail trails, Dorney Park and more.  Find more things to do HERE, and make a “race-cation” out of it!

On the fence about this race?  Watch our race videos HERE, get fired up and register below.

Independence Olympic

Sunday 23 May, 2021 at 7:00 AM
Triathlon: 1.5 K Swim, 40K Bike, 10K Run
Aquabike: 1.5K Swim, 40K Bike
Course Details & Course Maps

Swim: The swim is a rectangular shaped course tucked into crisp, clear waters of Lake Nockamixon. There are two (2) yellow triangle swim buoys on the course that the Olympic athletes will go around.  There will be round, orange buoys for sighting placed every 75-100 meters. The water temperature was 76F in 2018, but temps in the low 70’s are the norm for this race (wetsuit legal). We will post a preliminary water temperature the Friday evening prior to the event with an official reading taken and posted by our USAT officials race morning. The water temperature in 2018-77, 2019-73.

Bike: The Independence bike course is closed to traffic, well paved and has no turns outside the park except for the turnaround points at each end of the course.  The closed course feels like a racetrack with the forest on both sides of the road, wide shoulders and rolling terrain with about 1200′ of climbing throughout. Olympic athletes will do two (2) loops of the bike course.  You’ll see signs by the boat ramp entrance saying “Start 2nd Lap – Straight / Finish 2nd Lap – Right”. If you follow the signs and know what lap you are on, you’ll be good to go. This park sits in a beautiful part of the country and this bike course lets you revel in that beauty for 24 gorgeous miles.

Run: The Olympic run course is a 2 loop, 10k course on the shoulder of 563. It leaves the race site and follows the shoulder for 1.5 miles of out and back, Olympic athletes will do 2 loops of this course. Never far from the lake, this run has some rollers and has a mix of sun and shade with intermittent views of the lake. There are aid stations every mile serving Gatorade and ice water. Once you finish the race you’ll be able to spend some time at the lake talking to old friends and making new ones with plenty of post race food and music.

Parking:  Please note that with the benefit of a closed bike course comes the fact that athletes are “locked-in” the race site until the last cyclist is off the course at approximately 10AM.  We can’t have a closed bike course and then allow 200 cars on it…thank you in advance for your understanding.
